Georgia Tidewater Outfitters

Georgia Tidewater Outfitters offers Altamaha River Delta cruises guided by Kim and Paul Medders. Cruises are conducted on the Delta Belle, a 30-foot Sightseer Marine custom catamaran.

Sapelo Hamock Golf Club

Sapelo Hammock Golf Club, located in Shellman Bluff, Georgia, is one of the area's premier golf clubs. The challenging 18-hole course features the beautiful coastal Georgia landscape as a backdrop. Check the site for tee times.

Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge

Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge is one of the seven refuges administered as part of the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex. The refuge is located in McIntosh County, Georgia and just a 20 minute drive from the Darien Waterfront Inn. In the photo are hundreds of nesting wood storks!

Altamaha Waterfowl Management Area

Georgia's Colonial Coast Birding Trail. Each site along the Colonial Coast Birding Trail is unique. Many sites offer visitors the opportunity to watch birds and visit 18th and 19th Century historic places. Other sites are located on lands and waters that were once part of early plantations dedicated to growing rice, indigo and cotton. So whether you want to see a bald eagle soaring over a coastal river, an endangered wood stork feeding its gawky young, sanderlings chasing the waves on a sandy beach, or a great egret standing motionless in a placid pond, the Colonial Coast Birding Trail has something for you.

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation

This beautiful plantation represents the history and culture of Georgia's rice coast. The plantation and its inhabitants were part of the genteel low country society that developed during the antebellum period. One of Innkeeper JoAnn's favorite places to visit.

Jekyll Island

There's an explorer in each of us. Discover miles of wide-open beaches, 25 miles of bike paths winding through marshes teeming with life, and live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Jekyll beach is Innkeeper's JoAnn and David's favorite place to go! The picture to the left is their favorite spot. Jekyll is a 30 minute drive from Darien.

Saint Simons Island

St. Simons Island, GA is home to fabulous beaches, golfing, fishing, and a variety of shops and restaurants, fun events and entertainment for everyone. Saint Simons is a short 25 minute drive from Darien. East Beach, on the island's ocean side, is an excellent place to enjoy typical beach activities. For bird watching, try Gould's Inlet, at the north end of East Beach.

Ashantilly Center

The Ashantilly Center, known as "Old Tabby," was the mainland home of Thomas Spalding, early Georgia planter, legislator, and McIntosh County landowner. The original home, circa 1820, burned in 1937, and the current house was an ongoing project of the Haynes family. Today, the Ashantilly Center is a non-profit educational and cultural historic site, organized and founded by William G. Haynes, Jr. Mr. Haynes was an artist, small letterpress printer (The Ashantilly Press), and environmentalist. His legacy, the Ashantilly Center, hosts cultural and historic events and workshops.

Butler Island Plantation

Located in the coastal marshes formed by the mouth of the Altamaha River, the island is now part of the Altamaha Waterfowl Management Area. It is open to the public daily and features plantation ruins, historical markers and walking trails. Well-maintained nature viewing tours and a kayak launch area too.

Cycling Around Darien

The grid-style city blocks and squares make Darien the perfect little town for exploring on bicycles. The East Coast Greenway is the country's longest biking and walking route - it connects 15 states, 450 cities and towns, and 3,000 miles of people-powered trails from Maine to Florida — and it passes right through Darien, Georgia.

Fort King George State Historic Site

"The reconstructed Fort King George anchors present day visitors to a rich history where Native American and European cultures met, colonial empires collided, soldiers toiled and perished, and industry boomed on the shores of the Altamaha River."

Kayaking the Altamaha River

Experience kayak adventures in one of the most beautiful and remote areas in the southeast. The Altamaha River BioReserve is a world of wilderness and natural wonder. Saint Cyprians Church

The church was built for former slaves of the area. It is one of the few African-American Episcopal in the state of Georgia and is part of the Episcopal community of Mcintosh County.

Sapelo Island

Steeped in history and natural beauty, Sapelo Island is the fourth largest of Georgia's chain of barrier islands and home to a small Gullah-Geechee community called Hog Hammock. Sapelo is also home to the R.J. Reynolds Mansion and the Sapelo Island Lighthouse. Your Innkeeper, JoAnn, is happy to make tour reservations for you.
